Drag queens slammed for hosting 'hunky Jesus' contest at Easter show (2025)

A drag queen group has come under fire for its annual transgenderEaster event, which featured various activities for children and showcased a 'hunky Jesus' contest.

TheSisters of Perpetual Indulgence, a self-proclaimed 'order of queer and trans nuns,' hosted their 'No Easter without the T' event to honor 'our trans brothers and sisters who are under siege' on Easter Sunday, according to organizers.

An Easter egg hunt, relay games and story times for children among the morning offerings at the controversial celebration atDolores Park in San Francisco, California.

But the day's main event was the Hunky Jesus contest, which garnered araucous crowd of about 10,000 people.

'Donald Trump' took center stage at the annual contest, with top contestants in drag brutally mocking the president.

One gay man, calling himself ‘F**k Donald Trump Jesus’, openly mock-humped a Trump doll as revelers cheered him on. He placed runner-up in the jaw-dropping competition.

A contestant named ‘Cowboy Carter Jesus’ was declared the winner, waving a gay pride flag from atop a giant, glittery buffalo - a take onBeyonce’s latest incarnation as a country singer.

In his victory speech, he took a political shot at the administration, while decrying the ‘right wing supremacists’ he said are threatening the trans community.

‘If we were more like Jesus and less like Christian nationalists, our country wouldn’t be as f**ked up as it is now,’ Cowboy Carter Jesus - a 19-year-old whose real name is Wesley Walker - exclaimed to the boisterous pro-LGBTQIA crowd.

There was also a Foxy Mary contest, during which bikini-wearing Mother Marys flaunted pro-choice signs and other liberal sentiments.

The event, featuring satirical takes on Jesus on the holiest day of the year for Christians, was organized by the Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence, a global nonprofit group of drag nuns founded in San Francisco on Easter 46 years ago.

Organizers revealed their motives behind hosting the event.

‘There is a full-on movement to erase trans people,’ Sister Shalita Corndog, 46, one of the organizers, told DailyMail.com.

‘This hatred is at a level equal or worse than that of the Third Reich,’ he said, likening the Trump government to the leadership of Nazi Germany.

‘Donald Trump and his administration is doing the same thing. We’re moments away from extermination camps. America needs to wake up.’

Jukie Sunshine, a 55-year-old queer woman wearing a pink fuzzy shawl and bonnet, told DailyMail.com this is her favorite event of the year, and that ‘this year is especially important for us to come out because we’re fighting fascism together.’

‘We’re hear supporting trans rights and the rights of immigrants, and looking fabulous,’ she added with a laugh, strolling through the park and enjoying the colorful costumes and camaraderie.

With the smell of weed wafting through the air, Carol, a cis male sporting a beard and see-through pink dress, peddled alcohol from a stand.

‘Jello shots for Jesus,’ he called out, while also selling ‘White Claws for Christ,’ and Zinfandel cocktails he dubbed the ‘Blood of Christ.’

‘I hope he’s impeached and thrown in prison,’ Carol told DailyMail.com of Trump, joining the masses in blasting the president. ‘And I know a good prison in El Salvador.

‘We can see the importance of community now more than ever,’ he added. ‘We’re rallying together in support of trans people so they don’t have to fight alone.’

Sister T’aint A Virgin, a 46-year-old organizer wearing a pink wimple around his head, told DailyMail.com that ’10,000 people coming together in our park is a positive reflection of the work and commitment we all have.

'I think of us as holy fools, bringing light and levity to often blasphemous or controversial topics.’

Walker, the winner of the Hunky Jesus contest, told DailyMail.com his father and grandfather were both Baptist ministers.

‘Christ has been taken over by right-wing conservatives,’ he said. ‘The message they have is one of hate and intolerance. Jesus’ message is one of tolerance and acceptable for all people.’

Kyle Quinn, the 39-year-old dressed as ‘F**k Donald Trump,’ told DailyMail.com that he was raised Catholic but has since abandoned his religion.’

‘Trump stands for everything I’m against,’ he said. ‘Every time I watch the news these days, I say to myself, "Jesus Christ, f**k Donald Trump." That’s the inspiration for my costume.’

While the Hunky Jesus contest is welcomed in the liberal bastion of San Francisco, some on the right have called out the group for its ‘sacrilege.’

When the Los Angeles Dodgers recognized the Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence for public service in 2023, then-US Sen Marco Rubio called out the group’s Easter ceremony ‘where adult performers dress in blasphemous imitation of Jesus and Mary.’

The current Secretary of State also decried the group’s hosting of pub crawls ‘mocking the Stations of the Cross and even the Eucharist, the sacrament that unites more than one billion Catholics around the world.’

Horrified Christians shared their thoughts on the event, which they described as distasteful.

'I doubt they would do this to those who are Muslim, would they?' one X user claimed.

Some people were particularly concerned about the group catering to children.

'I am conservative. However, I do support freedom of speech. But these people should NOT aim at underage,' one man wrote on X.

Another wrote: 'This is DISGRACEFUL AND DISGUSTING!!! Pandering to CHILDREN? This is just plain WRONG!!!

I don’t care what adults do, that’s their own choice. To drag this into Easter Celebrations is wrong.'

Libs of Tiktok, a conservative social media account, called out the Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence for being hypocritical for inviting children while warning parents 'some may find the latter portion of the show inappropriate for young children.'

'They literally say that their show is inappropriate for children while still encouraging children to attend,' Libs of TikTok said.

But event organizers weren’t backing down from what they see as the real purpose of the festivities.

‘I am not going to lie and pretend Hunky Jesus is not blasphemous,’ Corndog admitted to DailyMail.com.

‘But in that blasphemy is the mission of Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence – to expiate stigmatic and religious guilty. We use satire and humor to help show this.’
